[Croky Cup Round of 16] AFC Tubize fall in a well fought match
In one of the most exciting matches in the Croky Cup this year, AFC Tubize narrowly lost to KV Oostende in the round of 16. Oostende qualified for the quarterfinals of the Belgian Cup football, the Croky Cup, by defeating AFC Tubize 3-4 after extra time.
Due to their opponents being exceptionally good on the offense side in recent matches, AFC Tubize came out with a defensive formation of 5-4-1 with Quentin Beaunardeu starting in goal. Quentin Laurent, Alassane Toure and Clement Fabre were the three center backs with Emeric Dudouit and Nicolas Garcia starting at the wing backs. Mario Babic and Shean Garlito sat in the middle of the pitch with Sega Keita and Simon Zenke out the wings. Mamadou Diallo was the lone striker up top.
AFC Tubize, started the game in the worst way possible, conceding in the 1st minute. However, in the 12th minute, Sega Keita drew a foul inside the box and was rewarded with a penalty kick. It was Mamadou Diallo who stepped up to take the penalty kick, but he put his shot just wide of the post. Later on in the 34th minute, it was Mamdou Diallo again who had a brilliant chance, shielding the defender while turning to put a shot on target, but unfortunately it hit the woodwork.
The second half started similar to the first half, as Oostende scored again within the first minute through a brilliant direct free kick. However, in the 56th minute, nobody saw what was about to come.
Sega Keita made a brilliant run down the right side and slotted cross into Simon Zenke who fluffed his first chance but managed to get his second shot on target. It was denied by a good save, but not from the goalkeeper. AFC Tubize were rewarded a penalty kick yet again, and this time Oostende were going down a man. Sega Keita stepped up to take the spot kick and converted it, making it 1-2 to the visitors. 2 minutes later, a brilliant whipped ball from Mario Babic found Quentin Laurent in the box and he nodded it past the goalkeeper who was stuck in no man’s land. Just like that it was all even at 2-2. In the 64th minute, Quentin Laurent played out from the back, lofting a ball for Mamadou Diallo, which was a little long but the goal keeper spilled the ball right in to his path. Mamadou Diallo then calmly took the ball and slotted it home to complete the turn around.
5 minutes later, Oostende equalized with a well-placed volley just outside the box to tie the game up at 3-3, which stood until the end of 90 minutes. For the first time this season, AFC Tubize would be heading into extra time.
Not much happened right until the end of extra time, when Oostende drew a foul on Clement Fabre in the box. It was unfortunate for the defender who had played an excellent game. Oostende converted the ensuing spot kick and sealed a spot in the round of 8, with the referee blowing for full time just after AFC Tubize kicked off.
It was a heart breaking lost for AFC Tubize who played their best game this season and almost upsetting one of the strongest teams in Belgium. Their amazing run in the cup ended but they will gain confidence heading into the weekends league match against OH Leuven on Saturday.
